A Deal For Roberts

Posted Jul 15, 2010

Third-round receiver agrees to four-year contract; Three picks unsigned

Wide receiver Andre Roberts agreed to a four-year contract Thursday.

And then there were three.

Last week the Cardinals had none of their seven draft picks signed. But Thursday, after third-round pick Andre Roberts agreed to a four-year contract, the team has just three picks left to sign – second-rounder Daryl Washington, fourth-rounder O'Brien Schofield and first-rounder Dan Williams.

The Cardinals released defensive lineman Ryan Kees to make room for Roberts on the roster.

Terms were not revealed, but the National Football Post said the signing bonus is worth about $724,000. The deal is expected to be worth about $2.5 million.

Roberts, from The Citadel, is a wide receiver vying for the fourth spot behind Larry Fitzgerald, Steve Breaston and Early Doucet. He is expected to battle veteran Onrea Jones for that work, although Roberts is also in the mix to replace Breaston as punt returner. Breaston, moving to the No. 2 receiving slot, will likely lose return duties to protect him for offense.

Roberts is The Citadel’s record-holder for career catches (285), receiving yards (3,743) and punt return yards (1,160), although he will have to prove he can perform consistently against a higher level of competition.

The Cards still have a little more than two weeks to get Washington, Schofield and Williams under contract.

Players arrive in Flagstaff the afternoon of July 30 to check in for training camp.
