Calvin Inks Contract

Posted Jul 9, 2010

Sixth-round cornerback signs four-year deal, Stewart released

Sixth-round pick Jorrick Calvin signed a four-year contract.

For the second day in a row, the Cardinals have signed a draft pick.

This time, though, it came with consequences.

With sixth-round cornerback Jorrick Calvin signing a four-year deal, the Cards were forced to release a player to stay within the 80-man roster limit. The team cut undrafted rookie wide receiver Juamorris Stewart, who missed the bulk of offseason work because of a hamstring injury.

Including the five remaining unsigned draft picks, the Cardinals have 85 players on the roster. Unsigned players don’t officially count, so as each pick is signed, somebody has to be released.

Terms were not disclosed, but the National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson reported the deal was worth $1.87 million with a signing bonus slightly more than $88,000.

Calvin, a cornerback who did not play his senior season at Troy because he was academically ineligible, is trying to find a spot in the team’s secondary. But his most likely avenue to the active roster would be on returns, after averaging 10 yards a punt return and 25.7 yards a kick return in 2008.

The Cardinals still have their top five draft picks unsigned. In order from the fifth-round up, they are quarterback John Skelton, linebacker O’Brien Schofield, wide receiver Andre Roberts, linebacker Daryl Washington and nose tackle Dan Williams.

The rookies are scheduled to report to Tempe for training camp July 29, with check-in at training camp in Flagstaff July 30.
