Benson Mayowa Added To Cardinals' Defense

Defensive end played last season in Dallas

New Cardinals defensive end Benson Mayowa takes part in the team's Phase Two work Monday.

With the first minicamp over and with the coaching staff able to sort out what they have on the roster, the Cardinals made a move to improve depth at defensive end Monday by signing former Cowboy Benson Mayowa to a one-year contract.

Mayowa, released by Dallas just prior to the start of free agency, had previously come in for a visit earlier this month.

Mayowa, who had six of his nine career sacks in 2016 with the Cowboys, struggled in 14 games with Dallas last season with one sack and 21 tackles, starting twice. But he might be able to help at a position that features Chandler Jones but has uncertainty with the ACL rehab of fellow starter Markus Golden.

All of the other defensive ends on the roster are inexperienced: Bryson Albright, Praise Martin-Oguike and Germany football project Moubarek Djeri.

Mayowa entered the league as an undrafted rookie out of Idaho in 2013, signing with the Seahawks. He made the 53-man roster, although he played in just two games while Seattle won the Super Bowl. Cut the following preseason, he was claimed by the Oakland Raiders. He had two sacks in two seasons as a reserve before the Cowboys signed him as a restricted free agent.
