Cardinals Come Up With "Final" Roster

Posted Aug 31, 2013

TE King to IR, LB Walker let go as first version of 2013 Cardinals waits for change

Rookie safety Tony Jefferson (36, making tackle) made the final roster. Linebacker Reggie Walker (56, behind) was released in final cuts.

The Cardinals are down to their 53. Or at least their initial 53-man roster on Sunday, before waiver claims probably change it later in the week.

General Manager Steve Keim made the last seven necessary moves needed to pare down the roster, including putting tight end Jeff King (knee) and defensive tackle Ricky Lumpkin (shoulder) on injured reserve and releasing five others: linebacker Reggie Walker, wide receiver Kerry Taylor, tackle Jamaal Johnson-Webb, linebacker Kenny Rowe and defensive tackle Padric Scott.

Of the players cut, all but Walker are practice-squad eligible. The Cardinals will have a practice squad determined by Sunday afternoon.

The moves mean a few different things:

-- The Cardinals kept a stunning 11 defensive backs, including seven cornerbacks.

-- After much consideration, the Cards kept both third quarterback Ryan Lindley and oft-injured running back Ryan Williams.

-- Aside from wide receiver Ryan Swope, who retired in the offseason because of concussions, the Cardinals kept every one of their other draft picks – eight total (first-round pick Jonathan Cooper is on injured reserve.)

-- Three undrafted rookies – wide receiver Jaron Brown, linebacker Kenny Demens and safety Tony Jefferson – made the team. But guys like Demens or Jefferson could be the ones moved out if a player is picked up from waivers.

The question now is how much the roster could change in the next couple of days. The Cardinals return to practice Monday and by then there could already be a shift. Players have 24 hours to clear waivers and the Cardinals have made it clear there will be further additions – and corresponding cuts.

“You normally cut the guys you like coaching,” Arians said earlier in camp. “They are overachievers. They do everything you asked of them. They are just not quite good enough. That’s the hardest part. Sometimes it’s a dream coming to an end. “
