Cardinals Sign Chilo Rachal

Team adds veteran guard as offensive line-heavy draft approaches

The Cardinals signed guard Chilo Rachal (62), formerly of the Bears and 49ers -- where he played next to former/current teammate Adam Snyder (68) -- to a contract Wednesday.

At the NFL owners meetings last month, Bruce Arians was asked if the Cardinals were planning on adding any offensive linemen in free agency.

“There could still be a piece or two pre-draft,” the Cardinals’ coach said. “We will exhaust those options until they phase out.”

One piece was added Wednesday, when the Cardinals brought aboard veteran guard Chilo Rachal – who played last season with the Bears – to a one-year contract. Rachal played the previous four years of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, starting alongside new teammate Adam Snyder some of that time.

Rachal’s presence is another move to give the Cardinals flexibility entering the draft. The Cards now have three veteran guards – Snyder, Daryn Colledge and Rachal – along with the inexperienced Senio Kelemete and January signee Jeremiah Warren. A guard like Alabama’s Chance Warmack could also be in play in the draft, and if the Cardinals were to draft a tackle, there is the possibility of one of the Cards’ current tackles sliding inside to play guard.

Arians has reiterated several times he is confident in the existing offensive line pieces, especially with the return of tackle Levi Brown from injury. Nevertheless, the team is expected to address the unit in the draft given the depth of talent at the various offensive line positions.

Rachal becomes the 13th veteran free agent signed by the Cardinals in a month. Rachal started eight of his nine games with the Bears last season, before briefly leaving the team when he was demoted from the starting lineup. When he returned, the Bears left him on the reserve/non-football injury list.
