Cards Make Change At QB Coach

Posted Jan 9, 2012

Chris Miller let go; no replacement named yet

Quarterbacks coach Chris Miller, who was fired, talks to center Lyle Sendlein during a game this season.

The day after the season ended, head coach Ken Whisenhunt said part of the process would be to evaluate the coaching staff to see if any changes would be made.

The answer, after a rocky season by the offense and struggles from newly acquired quarterback Kevin Kolb, was yes.

Quarterbacks coach Chris Miller was let go after spending three seasons with the team, leaving a vacancy that for now doesn’t have an immediate replacement.

“In the analysis of where we are and the progress that’s been made we felt a change at that position was what we needed,” Whisenhunt said in a brief statement.

The Cardinals do have interest in a return of former offensive coordinator Todd Haley, but as of Monday that was far from certain. On the Cards’ current staff, the lone man to have ties to the position is tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens, who played quarterback in college for Alabama.

Miller was hired before the 2009 season to replace Jeff Rutledge. In his first coaching experience higher than the high school level, Miller ended up working with a lot of quarterbacks in his tenure: Kurt Warner, Matt Leinart and Brian St. Pierre in his first season; Derek Anderson, Max Hall, John Skelton and Rich Bartel in year two; Skelton, Kolb and Bartel this past season.
