David Johnson To IR As Chris Johnson Returns

Foster also added from New England practice squad as Cardinals bolster running back depth

The Cardinals have re-signed veteran running back Chris Johnson after placing David Johnson on injured reserve.

With a doctor’s second opinion confirming the first about the dislocated wrist of David Johnson, the all-pro running back was officially placed on injured reserve Tuesday.

In his place, the Cardinals have brought back veteran Chris Johnson, who had been released at the end of the preseason.

Coach Bruce Arians said Monday Chris Johnson was an option if David Johnson was indeed sidelined. The Cardinals also signed running back D.J. Foster from the Patriots’ practice squad. Foster went to Arizona State and grew up locally, going to high school at Scottsdale Saguaro.

The Cardinals cut tackle Ulrick John to clear roster space for Foster.

David Johnson could eventually return this season, although it will depend on multiple factors – his rehab, and also how the season plays out for the team.

Johnson’s wrist surgery has an 8-to-12 week timetable. He must spend at least eight weeks on IR, which at the earliest would allow a return to the field Nov. 7. The Cardinals host the Seahawks two days later, in a Thursday night game. They play at Houston Nov. 19.

The addition of Chris Johnson leaves a crowded backfield. He had been the presumed backup to David Johnson throughout training camp, but Andre Ellington played well in training camp and was kept instead. Kerwynn Williams had been listed as David Johnson’s backup.

How the five running backs are now used – including bigger back Elijhaa Penny – is to be determined. Ellington said Monday there had yet to be any discussion about new roles.

The Cardinals also re-signed tackle Givens Price to the practice squad and cut two others from the practice squad: cornerback Ryan Lewis and running back James Summers. That leaves two open practice squad spots.
