Biography

Pro Career:

Originally a third-round draft choice (73rd overall) of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1999 NFL Draft, spent eight seasons in Pittsburgh before being released on 3/1/07. Signed a five-year contract with the Dolphins as a free agent on 3/7/07 and played three seasons with Miami. Released by the Dolphins on 3/5/10 and signed a three-year contract with the Cardinals as a free agent on 3/19/10.

2010: In first season in Arizona started all 14 games played, missing the last two games of the season with a tricep injury … led team with 11 QB pressures and tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles … five sacks tied for the second most on the team … recorded three tackles, one QB pressure and tied for the team-lead with two QB hits in first game as a member of the Cardinals @ StL (9/12) … recorded four tackles, one tackle for loss, one QB pressure and one forced fumble @ Atl (9/19); forced Matt Ryan to fumble at the ATL 48 late in the second quarter and it was recovered by CB Greg Toler … forced a fumble and a loss of 14 yards on a fourth quarter sack of Bruce Gradkowski to go with four tackles and one tackle for loss vs. Oak (9/27); first sack as a member of the Cardinals; marked third career sack of Gradkowski, now has 7.5 career sacks against the Raiders … recorded five tackles, one tackle for loss and one QB pressure vs. NO (10/10); part of defense that held Drew Brees to his second lowest passer rating (68.2) since the start of the 2009 season (58.9 at Mia, 10/25/09) … registered four tackles, one pass defensed and one sack @ Sea (10/24); marked first career sack of Matt Hasselbeck; including the postseason it was his 100th career sack … for the second straight game recorded a sack vs. TB (10/31); sack forced TB into a 3rd-n-24 they did not convert; marked first time recording sacks in back-to-back games as a member of the Cardinals; first career sack of QB Josh Freeman … registered a season-high six tackles, two sacks and five QB pressures @ Min (11/7); pressured Brett Favre on his third quarter INT to Rashad Johnson with the ball on the AZ two-yard line; marked second and third career sacks of Favre … recorded three tackles and one QB pressure vs. StL (12/5) … recorded four tackles and one tackle for loss @ Car (12/19) … inactive (tricep) for each of the final two games: vs. Dal (12/25) and @ SF (1/2/11).

 

2009: Started all 14 games in which he appeared in his final season with Miami and finished with 41 tackles, a team-high 9.0 sacks and one forced fumble … inactive vs. Buf (10/4) due to a hamstring injury, and was inactive vs. TB (11/15) ... posted an eight-yard sack of Peyton Manning vs. Ind (9/21) ... recorded two tackles and a sack of Philip Rivers, forcing a fumble on the play, which was recovered by Miami @ SD (9/27); suffered a hamstring injury in second half and did not return to action ... notched four tackles and a half-sack of Drew Brees vs. NO (10/25) … led the team with eight tackles, adding two sacks of Jake Delhomme @ Car (11/19) ...  recorded five tackles and 2.5 sacks of Ryan Fitzpatrick @ Buf (11/29); marked his second multi-sack game of the season (and his second in two games) and the 22nd multi-sack game in his career (including eight as a member of the Dolphins) ... recorded three tackles and a sack of David Garrard @ Jax (12/13) … recorded two tackles and a sack of Ben Roethlisberger vs. Pit (1/3/10); also added a fumble recovery, covering up a Roethlisberger fumble on Pittsburgh’s 13-yard line following a Nate Jones sack.

 

2008: Started all 16 games in his second season with the Dolphins, also starting the team’s lone playoff contest … had a career-year on his way to his fourth Pro Bowl selection, posting 47 tackles, a career-high 17.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and a fumble recovery … his 17.5 sacks were the most by a Dolphin LB in team history, surpassing Bryan Cox’s previous mark of 14.0 in 1992 … ranked first in the AFC and second in the NFL in sacks … had six tackles and a sack vs. NYJ (9/7), taking down Jets QB Brett Favre for a six-yard loss ... recorded six tackles with four sacks for a total of 15 yards in losses @ NE (9/21), sacking Matt Cassel three times for 13 yards in losses and Kevin O’Connell once for a two-yard loss; added a forced fumble on the last of the three Cassel sacks; marked the sixth time he had three or more sacks in a game; four sacks tied for the fourth highest single-game total in team history and were the most since E.J. Junior recorded four sacks on 10/6/91 at New England; also gave him 70.5 sacks for his career, making him the only player in NFL history to record 10 career INTs and 70 career sacks ... totaled two tackles and a half-sack of Philip Rivers vs. SD (10/5) ... recorded three tackles and a sack of Matt Schaub @ Hou (10/12); added five QB hurries and one pass defensed ... recorded four tackles and two sacks vs. Bal (10/19), taking down Joe Flacco both times for a total of 14 yards in losses ... notched four tackles, two sacks of Trent Edwards and two forced fumbles vs. Buf (10/26); one forced fumble resulted in a turnover and the other a safety; also added a fumble recovery; safety came from his second sack and forced fumble of the game, sacking Edwards in the end zone and forcing him to fumble; recovered by Buffalo in the end zone; marked his second straight multi-sack game … had 14 tackles, 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in October, earning AFC Defensive Player of the Month honors, the second Player of the Month Award of his career ... had three tackles and a sack of Jay Cutler @ Den (11/2) ... posted five tackles and 1.5 sacks of JaMarcus Russell vs. Oak (11/16) … posted a four-yard sack of Matt Cassel vs. NE (11/23) ... recorded two sacks of J.P. Losman @ Buf (12/7); also had a forced fumble when he tackled Losman on the second of his two sacks, resulting in a turnover; marked fourth multi-sack game of the season and the 17th multi-sack game of his career … made game-clinching play vs. SF (12/14), when he sacked Shaun Hill for a seven-yard loss on a fourth-and-ten play on the Dolphins 21-yard line with 1:07 left to preserve Miami’s 14-9 win ... started in Wild Card game vs. Bal (1/4) and had three tackles.

 

2007: In his first season with the Dolphins, started 15 of the 16 games in which he appeared  and finished with 65 tackles, 5.5 sacks, two INTs, five passes defensed and a forced fumble … sack total was the highest by a Dolphins LB since 1995 when Bryan Cox had 7.5 … only game he did not start was opener @ Was (9/9) when the Dolphins started with five DBs … broke a streak of 106 starts in games that he appeared … missed the entire preseason schedule after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on 8/7 … first sack as a Dolphin came vs. NE (10/21) when he dropped Tom Brady for a 10-yard loss … accounted for a season-high eight tackles in Monday Night game @ Pit (11/26) when he also came up with his first INT as a Dolphin, picking off a Ben Roethlisberger pass and returning it 14 yards … recorded five tackles, a sack and an INT of Kellen Clemens vs. NYJ (12/2); marked the second time in his career he came up with an INT in consecutive weeks, having also done it in games 2-3 of the ’02 season … totaled five tackles, including a pair of sacks of Tom Brady @ NE (12/23); forced a fumble on one of the sacks after the Patriots had made it to the Dolphins 26-yard line.

 

2006: In his final season in Pittsburgh, started all 14 games in which he appeared, missing two games with a hamstring injury … recorded 64 tackles, led the team with 7.0 sacks and added two INTs and five passes defensed on the season … had his best game of the season in the opener, collecting three tackles, two sacks of Daunte Culpepper and an INT vs. Mia (9/7); INT came in the fourth quarter with Pittsburgh clinging to a 21-17 lead; returned the INT 42 yards for a TD, his first-career INT return for a TD and his third career defensive TD … inactive for games vs. KC (10/15) and @ Atl (10/22) with a hamstring injury … returned to action and registered five tackles, two sacks of Andrew Walter and an INT @ Oak (10/29) … notched a pair of sacks of Bruce Gradkowski vs. TB (12/3) as he moved past Keith Willis into fourth on Pittsburgh’s all-time sack list; also marked his 12th career multi-sack game.

 

2005: Started all 16 games for the Steelers during the regular season while also starting all four postseason contests … earned his third trip to the Pro Bowl (second in as many years) after he led all NFL LBs with 10.5 sacks, while also adding three sacks in the postseason … finished the season with 61 tackles, a career-high five forced fumbles and two INTs … after undergoing knee surgery during the preseason, returned in time for the season opener and recorded four tackles and a sack of Steve McNair that also caused a fumble recovered by the Steelers vs. Ten (9/11) … posted three tackles and recorded his second sack in as many games, taking down David Carr @ Hou (9/18); also recovered a Carr fumble that resulted in a Pittsburgh TD two plays later and a 10-0 lead in the first quarter … tallied two solo tackles and recorded the Steelers only sack of the day, taking down Drew Brees in the first quarter for a six-yard loss on Monday Night @ SD (10/10) … had one of his best games of the season, finishing with seven tackles, a second quarter sack of Byron Leftwich which resulted in a fumble, and a pass defensed vs. Jax (10/16); with sack, passed Dwight White for sixth place on the Steelers all-time sack list with 46.5 … in his 100th career game, registered five tackles, a QB pressure and a pass defensed @ GB (11/6) … recorded two tackles, sacked Trent Dilfer for a seven-yard loss, and intercepted a Dilfer pass and returned it nine yards vs. Cle (11/13) … posted his sixth sack of the season when he took down Peyton Manning for a three-yard loss in the second quarter, forcing a Manning fumble on the play on Monday Night @ Ind (11/28) … recorded four tackles and took down Kyle Orton for a nine-yard loss on third down in the third quarter vs. Chi (12/11) … recorded four tackles and teamed with Kimo von Oelhoffen to sack Brad Johnson @ Min (12/18), Porter’s 50th career sack; stepped in front of a Johnson pass at the Steelers five-yard line, an INT that prevented a Vikings score in the second quarter … recorded five solo tackles, three sacks of Charlie Frye and two forced fumbles @ Cle (12/24) … recorded three tackles and a half-sack of Jon Kitna in the Wild Card matchup @ Cin (1/8/06) … logged two tackles and 1.5 sacks of Peyton Manning for a loss of 13 yards in the Divisional game @ Ind (1/15/06); recorded his 1.5 sacks on the Colts second to last drive, including one on a fourth-and-16 play that turned the ball over on downs … totaled four tackles and one sack of Jake Plummer in the AFC Championship game @ Den (1/22/06); Plummer fumbled on the first quarter sack and the ball was recovered by NT Casey Hampton; five plays later the Steelers scored a TD to take a 10-0 lead … logged three solo tackles in Super Bowl XL vs. Sea (2/5/06).

 

2004: Started all 15 games he appeared in during the regular season for the Steelers and also started both postseason contests … earned his second Pro Bowl selection and was named to the Associated Press All-Pro second-team after finishing the season with 63 tackles, seven sacks, three forced fumbles and an INT … notched his first sack of the season on which he forced a fumble by A.J. Feely @ Mia (9/26); added a team-high seven tackles, one QB pressure and a pass defensed … totaled five tackles and a career-high eight QB pressures vs. Cin (10/3) … had his biggest game of the season and earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors after registering eight tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles, both of which led to Pittsburgh TDs vs. NE (10/31); all three sacks were of Tom Brady … missed only game of the season after he was ejected prior to kickoff due to a pre-game altercation @ Cle (11/14) … took down Carson Palmer for his fifth sack of the season and also forced Palmer into an intentional grounding penalty on a QB pressure @ Cin (11/21) … finished with five solo tackles and two sacks of Patrick Ramsey vs. Was (11/28) … recorded four tackles, two passes defensed and logged his first INT of the season, sixth of his career, vs. Bal (12/26); INT was his first since 10/27/02 at Baltimore … totaled three tackles and a pass defensed in the Divisional game vs. NYJ (1/15/05) … sacked Tom Brady and added six tackles in the AFC Championship game vs. NE (1/23/05); marked his fourth sack of Brady during the 2004 season.

 

2003: Started all 14 games he appeared in after missing the first two games of the season due to a gunshot wound to the thigh that occurred on 9/6 … had surgery on 9/7 to remove the bullet which lodged in the thigh after entering his left buttocks … returned to collect 62 tackles, five sacks, two passes defensed and a fumble recovery on the season … in his first game back after being inactive for the first two weeks of the season, totaled three tackles, a fumble recovery on a failed lateral following an INT and also sacked Jon Kitna @ Cin (9/21) … recorded six tackles and sacked Marc Bulger twice for 16 yards vs. StL (10/26) … registered his fourth sack of the season vs. Ari (11/9) when he took down Jeff Blake; also added five tackles in the contest … registered his fifth sack of the season to tie Kevin Greene for eighth place on the Steelers all-time sack list (35.5) and added five tackles vs. SD (12/21) … led the team and tied a career-high with 10 tackles in the season finale @ Bal (12/28).

 

2002: Started all 16 regular season games for the Steelers and also started both postseason contests … earned his first career Pro Bowl selection and was named to the Associated Press, Sports Illustrated/Dr. Z and Pro Football Weekly first-team All-Pro squad ... recorded nine sacks, four INTs, a career-high eight passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries on the season … with nine sacks and four INTs, became the first player in the NFL (since sacks became official in 1982) to record at least eight sacks and four INTs in a season … had one of his biggest days as a pro and was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance vs. Oak (9/15); recorded 10 tackles, three sacks of Rich Gannon, two INTs and two passes defensed in the game; totaled 114 INT return yards, returning one INT a career-long 84 yards before being tackled; on the play, lateraled to Chad Scott who went on for a TD before the play was called back due to an illegal lateral … collected his third INT of the season and added seven tackles and a QB pressure vs. Cle (9/29) … registered his fourth sack of the season when he took down Aaron Brooks in the fourth quarter @ NO (10/6) … led the team with nine tackles and added two sacks and a forced fumble @ Cin (10/13); second quarter sack of Jon Kitna forced a fumble that was recovered by Casey Hampton and returned 36 yards to the Cincinnati seven-yard line, resulting in a Steelers TD on the ensuing drive that gave Pittsburgh a 24-0 lead … registered nine tackles, four QB pressures, two passes defensed and his fourth INT of the season @ Bal (10/27) … had another big game, recording eight tackles, a sack of Michael Vick, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery while adding five QB pressures and two passes defensed vs. Atl (11/10) … finished with six tackles and recovered a fumble @ Ten (11/17) … registered his eighth sack of the season when he took down David Carr in the second quarter vs. Hou (12/8) … recorded four tackles, a pass defensed and sacked Rob Johnson in the fourth quarter of the Monday Night contest @ TB (12/23) … recorded seven tackles and posted the second postseason sack of his career when he took down WR Kevin Johnson for a 15-yard loss after he had taken a handoff from QB Kelly Holcomb in the Wild Card matchup vs. Cle (1/5/03) … finished with eight tackles in the Divisional game @ Ten (1/11/03).

 

2001: Started all 15 games he appeared in for the Steelers during the regular season and also started both postseason contests … recorded 72 tackles, nine sacks, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery … recorded six tackles and his first sack of the season when he took down Rob Johnson in the second quarter @ Buf (9/30) … earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance @ TB (10/21); recorded seven tackles, a career-high four sacks, five QB hurries and a pass defensed; sacked Brad Johnson four times as part of a Steelers defense that sacked Johnson 10 times in the game … logged two sacks of Randall Cunningham and added seven tackles vs. Bal (11/4) … posted four tackles, two passes defensed and a forced fumble @ Cle (11/11) … had a big game against the Jaguars, registering his eighth sack of the season, nine tackles, three QB pressures, two passes defensed and a forced fumble vs. Jax (11/18) … set the tone early on the third play of the game when he registered his ninth sack of the season and forced a fumble by Mike McMahon that Jason Gildon recovered and returned 27 yards for a TD vs. Det (12/23); added two solo tackles in the game … totaled four tackles, four QB hurries and recovered his first fumble of the season (fourth of his career) in his final action of the regular season @ Cin (12/30) … missed the final game of the season because he was deactivated to rest a sore shoulder vs. Cle (1/6/02) … in his first career postseason action, set the tone early with his pressure of Elvis Grbac that resulted in a Chad Scott INT in the Divisional matchup vs. Bal (1/20/02); added six tackles and a sack of Grbac in the game … totaled five tackles and a pass defensed in the AFC Championship game vs. NE (1/27/02).

 

2000: Started all 16 games for the Steelers and posted 72 tackles, 10.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, an INT and three passes defensed in his first season as a full-time starter … his sack total, combined with the 13.5 sacks posted by Jason Gildon, gave the duo 25.0 total sacks and established a Steelers single-season record for a tandem …  in his first NFL start, had five tackles, three QB pressures and one special teams tackle … posted his first sack of the season and added three tackles @ Jax (10/1) … registered a sack for the second straight game and added three tackles @ NYJ (10/8) ... recorded eight tackles, a season-high three sacks and a forced fumble vs. Cin (10/15), including a sack of Scott Mitchell in the Bengals endzone that resulted in his first-career safety; marked his third consecutive game with a sack … finished with a career-high 10 tackles and posted two sacks of Trent Dilfer in a 9-6 win @ Bal (10/29) … recorded his first career INT and totaled eight tackles and three QB hurries @ Ten; INT came when he stepped in front of a Steve McNair pass and stopped a Titans scoring drive after they recovered a muffed punt deep in Steelers territory … registered five tackles and recovered an Eagles fumble in the fourth quarter, returning it 32 yards for a TD vs. Phi (11/12); marked his second career fumble return for a TD … logged his eighth sack of the season and added six tackles vs. Jax (11/19) … took down Akili Smith for his second sack in two games (ninth of the season) and also totaled eight tackles @ Cin (11/26) … recorded 1.5 sacks of Ryan Leaf and added three tackles in the season finale @ SD (12/24).

 

1999: As a rookie, appeared in all 16 games for the Steelers, all in a reserve role … on defense, recorded 15 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery … also added 15 tackles on special teams … in his first NFL game, recorded a sack and a forced fumble of Tim Couch @ Cle (9/12) … totaled a season-high four special teams tackles vs. Jax (10/3) … had his best game of the season in the finale vs. Ten (1/2/00), recording eight tackles and a sack of Neil O’Donnell; on the sack, forced a fumble, recovered it and returned it 46 yards for a TD.

 

College:

A four-year letterman at Colorado State, began his career as an H-Back before being moved to the defensive line for his junior season (1997) … in two seasons on defense, collected 88 tackles, 28 stops for loss and 22.0 sacks … was a CSU teammate of Cardinals LB Clark Haggans … as a senior in 1998, was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection and a third-team All-America pick when he amassed 53 tackles and a school single-season record of 15.0 sacks, which also represented the third-highest total in Division 1-A that year.
