He played football for Buchtel (OH) High School and attended class at Akron (OH) Early College High School, which offered an advanced curriculum and college credits. College: After spending his first three college seasons (2011-13) at FCS Gardner-Webb, transferred to West Virginia for his final year of eligibility in 2014 … in four collegiate seasons, appeared in 42 games (23 starts) and totaled 137 tackles, 17.5 sacks, 36.5 tackles for loss, four passes defensed and two forced fumbles … started seven of 12 games played for West Virginia in 2014 and registered 27 tackles, seven sacks and 11 tackles for loss on his way to being named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year by the conferences coaches … also earned All-Big 12 honorable mention honors … his seven sacks represented a team-high and ranked as the sixth-best total in the Big 12 … named Walter Camp Football Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after he posted five tackles, three sacks and four tackles for loss against Baylor … during his final season at Gardner-Webb in 2013, started a career-high 10 of 11 games played and established career highs in tackles (67), sacks (8.5) and tackles for loss (19) … named FCS All-America at DE and finished fifth in voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, given annually to the top defensive player in the FCS … FCS Co-Performer of the Year at DE by the College FB Performance Awards … named first-team All-Big South … led the team with 8.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss and 17 QB hurries … his 19 tackles for loss ranked as the second-highest total in the nation … started six of 11 games played as a sophomore and registered 37 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, two passes defensed and a forced fumble … saw action in eight games as a freshman, seeing action on special teams and as a reserve on the defensive line … finished the season with six tackles.
