Linebacker, special teamer voted into the best in the NFL squad

Cardinals linebacker Chandler Jones (left) and special teamer Budda Baker were voted first-team all-pro Friday.

Chandler Jones had his best season as a pro and the best season ever for a Cardinals’ pass rusher.

Budda Baker showed as a rookie he was worth the trade up in the second round to get him, even on special teams.

Both were rewarded Friday after those excellent years, as each were voted first-team all-pro by the Associated Press.

Running back David Johnson was named all-pro last season at the “flex” position – an extra offensive skill player other than the two running backs and two wide receivers. Cornerback Patrick Peterson and safety Tyrann Mathieu were named first team in 2015.

Baker, who also was named NFC special teamer for the Pro Bowl, received 30 of a possible 50 votes. No other special teamer got more than six votes. Baker, who came on late in the year as a safety after injuries forced him into the lineup, had 16 tackles on special teams this season as well as recovered an onside “mortar” kickoff by Phil Dawson in Washington.

Jones, meanwhile, was a menace all season to the opposition. Not only did he collect an NFL-leading 17 sacks – setting the Cardinals’ franchise-record in the process – but he also led the NFL in 28 tackles for loss to go with his 68 tackles, 38 quarterback hits, 15 quarterback pressures, two forced fumbles and two passes defensed.

He received 41 of a possible 50 votes, more votes than any other linebacker. He also received one vote in the “edge rusher” position (which is the spot in lieu of defensive end.)

Jones was just named NFC defensive Player of the Month on Thursday.

Peterson received five votes at cornerback, leaving him in seventh place at the position, and three votes in the extra “defensive back” category.
