Tight end Gerald Christian, who was "Mr. Irrelevant" in 2015, was chosen with a compensatory pick in the draft.

The Cardinals have seven picks in the upcoming draft again.

The NFL announced 2016 compensatory picks Friday, giving out 33 extra choices sprinkled at the ends of rounds three through seven. The Cardinals received an extra fifth-round pick – 170 overall, and the first of the fifth-round comp choices.

Comp picks are determined on a system based on free agents signed against free agents lost, factoring in salary and playing time.

The Cardinals benefitted by the big deal nose tackle Dan Williams signed with the Raiders and the amount he played in Oakland.

The Cards' formula was based on losing Williams, guard Paul Fanaika, cornerback Antonio Cromartie, tight end Rob Housler and linebacker Sam Acho, along with signing guard Mike Iupati, linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, defensive tackle Corey Peters and defensive tackle Cory Redding.

(Only true free agents are factored in, so players that had been cut and signed elsewhere do not count.)

Compensatory picks cannot be traded, although that will change beginning with the 2017 draft.

The Cardinals have single choices in Rounds one, two, three, four and six. The team does not have a seventh-round choice, having traded it to Philadelphia in exchange for quarterback Matt Barkley.

It's the second year in a row the Cardinals have received a compensatory pick. Last year, they got an extra seventh-rounder, the final pick of the entire draft. With the "Mr. Irrelevant" selection, the team took tight end Gerald Christian. Christian missed the season with a knee injury, and remains on the roster.
