The Cardinals are getting an extra draft choice in April.
The NFL announced the 2017 compensatory picks Friday, with the Cardinals adding an extra fifth-round selection – 179th overall, and 36th in the round – to their initial seven picks in the draft.
The Cardinals' first pick is 13th overall.
Compensatory picks are determined by a formula that takes into account free agents gained and lost the previous offseason, those players' contracts and their playing time. The extra picks are added at the end of each round
starting in the third round, 32 total.
The Cardinals actually qualified for four extra choices, but there were 39 total players across the league that qualified their teams for comp picks. With 32 the maximum amount of comp picks awarded across the league and with three of the Cardinals' player losses ranked below No. 32, the Cards did not get the extra three selections.
Other teams that didn't receive extra picks for qualifying players were the Rams, Packers and Steelers (two choices).
Free agents the Cardinals lost that qualified in the comp equation were safety Rashad Johnson, guard Ted Larsen, tackle Bobby Massie, tackle Bradley Sowell, linebacker Sean Weatherspoon and cornerback Corey White. The only free agents "gained" by the Cardinals in the equation were safety Tyvon Branch and guard Evan Mathis.
Four teams – the Bengals, Browns, Broncos and Chiefs – led the way with four comp picks awarded each.
Compensatory picks can be traded, a rule change for 2017 that should impact the draft. Previously, comp picks were not allowed to be dealt.
