Matt Barkley Comes Back To Cardinals

Posted Nov 13, 2017

With Stanton hurting, team adds QB behind Gabbert; Humphries, Branch, Momah to IR

The Cardinals have re-signed quarterback Matt Barkley.

The Cardinals made it official Monday, re-signing quarterback Matt Barkley to the active roster with current starter Drew Stanton dealing with a knee sprain.

Barkley will be the team’s third quarterback behind Stanton and Blaine Gabbert, and would be available to back up Gabbert in a game in case Stanton’s knee prohibits him from playing. Mike Bercovici remains on the practice squad.

The Cardinals return to the practice field Tuesday, and coach Bruce Arians meets with the media following the workout. The team plays in Houston Sunday.

The Cardinals also officially placed tackle D.J. Humphries (knee), safety Tyvon Branch (knee) and tight end Ifeanyi Momah (ankle) on injured reserve.

In addition to adding Barkley, the team promoted defensive back Harlan Miller from the practice squad. They still have one opening on their 53-man roster.

Cornerback Jarell Carter, who was with the Cardinals part of the preseason, was signed to replace Miller on the practice squad.

The Cardinals traded for Barkley at the end of the 2015 preseason. He spent the entire season on the 53-man roster but was inactive every game. He was with the Cards during the 2016 preseason as well before being released.

Barkley completed 50-of-86 passes for 630 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions for the Cards during the four 2016 preseason games.

He then signed with the Bears, playing in seven games and starting six. He completed 59.7 percent of his passes, with eight touchdown throws and 14 interceptions. He was signed by the 49ers in 2017 but was eventually released at the end of the preseason.
