Michael Bidwill Honored At Musial Awards

After saving NFF event in St. Louis, Cardinals president earns recognition

A gesture of goodwill by the Cardinals and Michael Bidwill led to an honor for Bidwill Saturday night in St. Louis.

Bidwill was recognized at the Musial Awards, held at the Peabody Opera House in St. Louis, for his donation to help a local football organization.

The St. Louis chapter of the National Football Foundation was short of funds to pay for its signature event, an annual banquet where it would honor the top 25 local high school players and present scholarship money to 11 scholar-athletes. It was an event once funded by the Rams when they played in St. Louis, but that ended when the Rams moved to Los Angeles.

Bidwill found out about the issue, and delivered a check for $10,000.

“I felt like this was a no-brainer,” Bidwill said. “With our history in St. Louis and our love for St. Louis … we felt like it was the right thing to do.”

In addition to the Cardinals’ long-time roots in their former city, Bidwill had been inducted into the NFF Hall of Fame in 2016.

“Michael Bidwill’s actions embody the goodness and decency we seek to celebrate with the Musial Awards,” said Frank Viverito, president of the St. Louis Sports Commission, in a statement. “This was something he certainly did not have to do and did not seek credit for. In light of everything, he sets a perfect example of what it means to be a ‘good sport.’”

The Musial Awards, named after Hall of Fame Cardinals baseball player Stan Musial, recognize the year’s greatest moments of sportsmanship and honor sports figures who personify its virtues.
