Feeding Ricky Seals-Jones

One of the most critical late-season developments for the Cardinals has been the emergence of rookie tight end Ricky Seals-Jones.

Since taking over as the third tight end against the Texans, Seals-Jones has amassed nine catches for 170 yards and three touchdowns in three games. He is second on the team in receptions and receiving yards in that span – behind Larry Fitzgerald – and first in touchdowns.

Seals-Jones had his lowest statistical output in this stretch on Sunday against the Rams -- two catches for 44 yards -- but would have scored for a third straight game if quarterback Blaine Gabbert didn't overthrow him on a pass to the end zone in the fourth quarter.

The numbers are impressive on their face, but even moreso when considering how little he has been on the field. Seals-Jones is still learning the intricacies of the position after converting from tight end this offseason, so Jermaine Gresham and Troy Niklas are still seeing most of the action.

Those gaudy numbers have been compiled on only 40 total offensive snaps in the three games. Pro Football Focus calculates each player's receiving yards per route run, and Seals-Jones' 5.67 since Week 10 dwarfs the competition at tight end, as Patriots superstar Rob Gronkowski is second with 2.81 yards per route run in that span.

Seals-Jones won't keep up this monstrous pace, but it seems clear he has become an intriguing piece for the future at a time when the Cardinals' receiving situation is in flux.
