Former NFL quarterback Matt Schaub was hired to Arizona's staff to coach the position he played on 2/20/26 after previously working in the league as a football analyst with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. Â
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Schaub played quarterback for 17 seasons (2004-20) in the NFL with the Falcons (2004-06; 2016-20), Texans (2007-13), Raiders (2014) and Ravens (2015) after being drafted by Atlanta in the third round (90th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft out of Virginia.
With the Falcons in 2023, Schaub assisted Atlanta head coach Arthur Smith with strategic game planning such as fourth-down decisions, two-point conversion opportunities and replay challenges.
A two-time Pro Bowl selection (2009, 2012) as a player, Schaub appeared in 155 games (93 starts) in the regular season and completed 2,148-of-3,348 pass attempts (64.2%) for 25,467 yards, 136 TDs and an 89.5 passer rating. He also rushed for 353 yards and four TDs. As a starting quarterback, Schaub led the Texans to back-to-back AFC South titles in 2011-12 and remains Houston's all-time leader in wins by a QB (46) while holding franchise career records for pass attempts (3,020), completions (1,951), passing yards (23,221) and passing TDs (124).
His first Pro Bowl selection came in 2009 with Houston when he started all 16 games and led the NFL in completions (396), pass attempts (583) and passing yards (4,770) with 29 TD passes. Schaub went on to be named the Pro Bowl MVP after completing 13-of-17 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns. He made his second Pro Bowl in 2012 when he led the Texans to a 12-4 record and an AFC South title, starting all 16 games and throwing for 4,008 yards and 22 TDs.
Schaub retired from the NFL following the 2020 season. He finished his career being named AFC Offensive Player of the Week four times (2008-10, '12), FedEx NFL Air Player of the Week twice (2010, 12) and was the 2012 recipient of the Texans Ed Block Courage Award.
Prior to his NFL career, Schaub attended the University of Virginia, where he appeared in 40 games over four seasons (2000-03) and completed 716-of-1,069 pass attempts (67.0%) for 7,502 yards and 56 TDs. His 7,502 passing yards rank second in school history. Schaub left Virginia holding over 22 program records and as one of the most accurate passers in ACC history. Prior to being hired by Arizona, Schaub spent the last two seasons (2024-25) as a radio broadcaster at Virginia.
The West Chester, PA, native established the GR8 HOPE Foundation in 2011 to provide resources and support to promote lasting improvements and bring healing to children with medical needs, hope for future generations and happiness to the children and their families enduring medical challenges. He and his wife, Laurie, have four daughters: Madison, Makayla, Mackenzie and Macie and a son, Matthew.
