SAN FRANCISCO -- Anquan Boldin's on-field production during his NFL career was unquestioned, to the point he is in the Hall of Fame discussion.

But his efforts off the field about affecting change in communities and helping those around the NFL would make him a lock for a Hall of Fame in that regard. And Boldin's Sport For Impact saw something with the Cardinals and owner Michael Bidwill and how Boldin's former organization deserved recognition in that area.

During Sport For Impact's annual Super Bowl luncheon Friday at the Hyatt Regency, Bidwill and the Cardinals were given the first of a new annual honor – the Sport For Impact Legacy Award. It honors an NFL coach, club, or owner who has "created a long and lasting impact in their community."

"Mike Bidwill comes from a long line of leaders," Boldin said, noting that the Cardinals had the first female owner in NFL history, the first Black GM-head coach combination (Rod Graves and Dennis Green), have a focus on helping people with special needs, and now have the Civics Matters program to be "shaping our country's next leaders."

Bidwill is on the NFL's social justice committee, formed with both owners and players. Boldin said working with that group "opened my eyes."

"Players are doing great work, but they aren't the only ones doing great work," Boldin said.

Bidwill was appreciative that SFI recognized the work the Cardinals have done.

"As (President) Ronald Reagan once said, 'We're just one generation away from losing our freedom,'" Bidwill said. "It's so important to teach kids to use civil discourse, use all the tools we have as Americans to make change.

"On behalf of the Cardinals, I'm so proud to accept this, and Anquan, I'm so proud of you and the other players who are working on change in communities throughout the United States."

Boldin was a founding member of the Players Coalition, which uses activism and advocacy to create systemic change. Sport For Impact was then created to help athletes extend their community impact and legacy following their playing days.

Newly-minted Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald was also honored by SFI, along with fellow Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz, also was honored with the group's Legacy Award. Fitzgerald was a part of the program as well, serving as a moderator for one of the discussions.

Cardinals offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum, the team's Walter Payton Man of the Year, was also in attendance.
