It's been a few months since Kyzir White first posted on social media his goodbye to the Cardinals, and a few weeks since new QB Jacoby Brissett was issued jersey No. 7, which is what White had worn his two years as inside linebacker.
But until this week, there hadn't been any real acknowledgment that there would be change at inside linebacker until coach Jonathan Gannon was asked how the Cardinals were handling moving on from a guy who had been a key defensive cog.
"He (was) a captain so that's a challenge from a leadership standpoint, and the defense," Gannon said. "But we feel really good where we are at right now. We're going to try a lot of guys out there. If they deserve a role they will have a role."
The Cardinals signed Akeem Davis-Gaither and Mykal Walker, drafted Cody Simon and still have Owen Pappoe as possibilities to work with Mack Wilson Sr. inside. How that filters out will be one of the most interesting of the offseason, especially after all the upgrades the Cardinals made all over the rest of the defense.
Meanwhile, White, who remains a free agent, deserves credit not only playing an important role on the field while he was in Arizona but also for helping spearhead the culture change Gannon put in place when he arrived.
