Eventually, Larry Fitzgerald will pull on his gold jacket during a ceremony in Canton this summer, and see his bust unveiled when he is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
But before there is a jacket, before there is a bust, before there is a Hall of Fame ring that Fitz will receive during a Cardinals home game this season, he has to be measured for all of it. That's what Saturday was all about.
Getting into the Hall comes with it duties, and that meant sitting for a couple of longer interviews at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis and autographing a bunch of helmets along with the rest of the Class of 2026. It also included getting Fitzgerald's measurements for his jacket and his bust, and for that gigantic ring (examples of which were on display.)
"It's really cool the thought and the detail that has gone into it," Fitzgerald said. "I guess you understand all these things need to be done but you don't really understand how they are going to be done. Getting a behind-the-scenes and to be able to experience with the rest of the guys in the class is pretty interesting."
The Fitzgerald bust will be interesting. The Cardinals legend spent nearly a half hour getting calipers on his head, looking through a book of other busts to determine details and, Fitz being Fitz, engaging in conversation with Blair Buswell, the long-time Hall of Fame sculptor.
There will be more steps eventually before Fitzgerald will get into the Hall. But two big ones – the measurements, and of course actually being announced to Class of 2026 – are complete.
