As State Farm Stadium Begins Season No. 20, Power Rankings Of Most Memorable Openers

Cardinals' home opened in 2006 against 49ers for regular season

The Cardinals begin their 20th season at State Farm Stadium on Sunday when they host the Panthers. It's weird to think the building is already 20; I still have the Cardinals' hard hat given to me when I took a tour of the place as it was getting built circa 2005, and I still remember the first time I was in there for a game -- a preseason day opener against the Steelers in 2006, when, after all those years at Sun Devil Stadium, it was an amazing sight (and site, for that matter.)

So as the Cards start No. 20, I thought I'd do a quick power rankings of my top regular-season home openers. I tried to get five, I ended up with seven(ish), and I thought, well, it's my list and there really are no rules. So here's the countdown. For me, at least.

  • 7. 'Monday Night Football' win over the Chargers, 18-17, in 2014: Linebacker Larry Foote makes the huge play late to help the Cardinals hang on, but the game for me was just as memorable because the rain came so hard earlier in the day I-10 was actually flooded out and impassable for a while. It was a crazy start to the season.
  • 6. Kyler Murray debut in 27-27 tie with the Lions, 2019: Murray looked bad -- really bad -- in his first half of NFL football, and Kliff Kingsbury later admitted he worried for a bit if he should've bought a house as his first game as coach was off the rails. But Murray magic showed up late and somehow the Cards pulled out a tie -- which, to be the Week 1 result -- was all kinds of strange.
  • 5. Beating future star QBs Cam Newton and Russell Wilson in their rookie debuts, 2011 and 2012: The Cardinals opened both years at home. Newton was unreal (stats) and Wilson showed why he'd be an Arizona pain in the rear. But Patrick Peterson notched the first of his four punt returns for TDs in 2011, and in both cases, the Cardinals' defense came up with red zone stops in the waning seconds to preserve one-score wins.
  • 4. David Johnson takes a pass to the house as a harbinger, 31-19, over Saints in 2015: A third-round running back who was a gamebreaker? Johnson was great as a rookie, and the Cardinals showed early why they would be one of the best teams in the NFL that season.
  • 3. Marvin Harrison Jr. shines as Cardinals crush Rams, 41-10, in 2024: So close in Buffalo to open the season, the Cardinals wax their NFC West rival and get a huge game from their rookie wide receiver. Might be some recency bias here, but there was little that wasn't memorable from a Cardinals' perspective that afternoon.
  • 2. Larry Fitzgerald's 100th touchdown but Patriots backup QB Jimmy Garappolo is an issue in 23-21 loss to Patriots, 2016: Stinks to have a loss this high, but it was "Sunday Night Football," the spotlight was intense for the Cardinals (Sports Illustrated had picked them to win the Super Bowl) and they didn't have to face Tom Brady. It didn't work out. But it was going to be high on the list regardless.
  • 1. Kurt Warner throws three TD passes to beat 49ers, 34-27, in first game, 2006: New building, major excitement, a sellout crowd and a lot of points. Did you know the first TD in the building was scored by Cardinals wide receiver ... Troy Walters? No, not Fitz or Anquan. A great start. (We won't talk about the eight-game losing streak that followed.)
