The Super Bowl is set, with the Seahawks representing the NFC and the Patriots representing the AFC. Last time those two teams played in a Super Bowl, it was one of the best, held at State Farm Stadium. (I am not sure the Patriots have what it takes to beat the Seahawks; such is the greatness of the NFC West this season.)
What it means for the Cardinals? More clarity in their head coaching search, which should be coming to a conclusion.
Now free are the coaches with the Rams and Broncos, freeing up Denver defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur and defensive coordinator Chris Shula to be hired immediately. (Reports have linked LaFleur and Joseph to the vacancy more than Shula.)
If the Cardinals still want to talk to any Seahawks or Patriots coaches, they are available this week as long as the Cardinals already spoke to them earlier, although hiring one would have to wait until after the Super Bowl.
This is after second interviews with Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile and Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver.
Also, Sunday morning the news came out that former Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon was going to be hired by LaFleur's brother, Matt, as the new defensive coordinator of the Packers. It was noted by more than a few that the decision means Gannon's defense in Green Bay will take on Drew Petzing's Detroit offense twice a season now that Petzing is the Lions' offensive coordinator.
