Snap Judgments For The Rams Game

Sweat, Campbell get less playing time; jumps for defensive youth

As the game got away from the Cardinals on Sunday against the Rams, the rotation not surprisingly shifted. That was no more apparent than seeing that two defensive players with regular work with the fewest snaps in the game were outside linebacker Josh Sweat and defensive lineman Calais Campbell.

Out of 70 defensive snaps, Campbell played just 23, tied for his lowest of the season. Sweat played just 25 by game's end, tying his lowest total (and his 36 percent was his lowest.) Postgame, Sweat was asked if the result was what he expected when he came to Arizona.

"I signed up to play wherever, I don't care, anywhere I can help," Sweat said. "I ain't really worried about that. We just didn't close out enough games earlier on in the season and they're starting to carry over."

On the other side, nose tackle Dalvin Tomlinson played 37 snaps, tying his second-highest total this season. Defensive lineman Dante Stills played a season-high 48 snaps, the second-highest total of his career, and Darius Robinson ramped up to 35 snaps. Both defensive lineman P.J. Mustipher and linebacker BJ Ojulari played a season-high 32.

In a planned move, the Cardinals also used inside linebacker Owen Pappoe ahead of Akeem Davis-Gaither. Pappoe, who hadn't played a defensive snap all season, played 35. Davis-Gaither played 1.

On offense, Jon Gaines played all 62 snaps in the first start of his career replacing the absent Evan Brown at left guard. And left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. missed his first snaps of the season after hurting his knee, playing 35 total. His injury meant rookie Josh Fryar played a career-high 32 snaps.
