With Kyler Murray Status In Question, Jacoby Brissett Ready For Cardinals

Gannon waiting to see who will start at QB against Colts

Jacoby Brissett could start in place of Kyler Murray on Sunday for the Cardinals when they play the Colts in Indianapolis.

The last time the Cardinals played in Indianapolis, the Colts quarterback was Jacoby Brissett.

The question is whether this time when the Cardinals play in Indy whether their own QB will be Jacoby Brissett.

Kyler Murray returned to practice on Friday on a limited basis, the first time he got work all week on his injured foot. Coach Jonathan Gannon said Friday morning "we'll see how it goes" for all the limited players, including Murray, but not surprisingly, he provided little hint of Murray's Sunday status.

Earlier in the week, Gannon said if Murray was healthy enough to play, he'd play. Murray not surprisingly is officially listed as questionable for the game.

Murray did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. Brissett, if pressed into the lineup, would be making his first start for Arizona. He has 53 career starts. He played for the Colts from 2017-2020.

"Same stuff, different day," Brissett said. "I've been through it before."

Saturday will provide another potential tell if the Cardinals elevate practice-squad quarterback Kaden Slovis for the game as a potential Brissett backup. Slovis also was with the Colts, coming into the league as an undrafted rookie in 2024 in Indy before being cut at the end of preseason.

Brissett's most recent start came last season, in Week 5 for the Patriots against the Miami Dolphins. In the 15-10 home loss, Brissett completed 18 of 34 passes for 160 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. His last significant work came in Week 8 last season in a reserve role, completing 15-of-24 passes for 132 yards, no touchdowns and no picks.

He said he's done what he can to build a rapport with the first-string pass catchers.

"I stay after practice a little bit, watching those guys go, figuring out what they like and what they don't like," Brissett said. "I'm still on the team, so I'm part of a lot of the conversations Kyler has with those guys too. Whenever you do get a chance to get a rep with those guys, do the best I can."

Murray will be evaluated again next week, but it's notable the Cardinals after hosting the Packers following their game in Indy will have their bye weekend. Murray was unavailable for comment.
