Gardner Minshew Reportedly Joining Cardinals QB Room

Jalen Thompson signing with Cowboys

The Cardinals are adding a quarterback, and we knew it wasn't Malik Willis or Tua Tagovailoa, who were headed to the Dolphins and Falcons, respectively.

Instead, it is reportedly Gardner Minshew, who will sign for about $5.75M and figures to provide a veteran backup to Brissett in a room that otherwise will only have Kedon Slovis. (The draft is still to come, which could change the dynamic once again.) Minshew was Patrick Mahomes' backup in Kansas City last season, and has 47 career starts in seven seasons with the Jaguars, Eagles, Colts, Raiders and Chiefs. He has a career 88.0 passer rating, 68 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.

Brissett looks like he will keep his starting job, after a season in which he found excellent chemistry with All-Pro tight end Trey McBride and wide receivers Michael Wilson and Marvin Harrison Jr., at least when MHJ was healthy.

(Jimmy Garoppolo was also apparently in the mix too.)

The Cardinals did lose a free agent on Monday. Safety Jalen Thompson is reportedly getting a three-year, $33M deal from the Cowboys after seven years in Arizona and breaking up the duo of he and Budda Baker. Thompson has always been solid, but the idea the Cardinals would pay two safeties double-digit millions going forward was unlikely. Rabbit Taylor-Demerson will have a chance to step in, although the way Nick Rallis uses his DBs, there are options there.
