Jacoby Brissett Cherished Chance To Play This Season

Quarterback has set career-highs in yards, TDs

Jacoby Brissett signed with the Cardinals in the offseason to be Kyler Murray's backup. He acknowledged earlier this season, after he got into the lineup following Murray's foot injury, that a couple of years ago he never thought he'd be in this position again.

But as the Cardinals' season comes to a close Sunday with Brissett making his 12th straight start, the veteran QB said he's had mixed feelings. On one hand, he has set his career-high with 21 touchdown passes and 3,123 yards passing. On the other, the Cardinals have won only once in that span.

"It's been tough," Brissett said. "I was talking to (offensive coordinator) Drew (Petzing) about this the other day, but I would much rather this than the alternative of not playing. Getting a chance to just go out there and compete, play a kid's game that I grew up playing since I was 5.

"I've been a part of things where I was playing, was not playing, didn't know when my next opportunity was going to come. To finally get an opportunity, like I said, obviously things haven't gone our way this year, but again, I'll take this over the alternative."

The quarterback question for the Cardinals and what the position will look like next season will be front and center starting next week. Murray, who remains on Injured Reserve, has not spoken publicly since after the loss to the Titans in Week 5, the game in which he first was injured. Speculation about his future will be a storyline not only locally but nationally. Brissett is also under contract through next season.

Like the coaching staff, Brissett had no desire to start talking about next year when there was still a game left. Still ...

"Would I like another opportunity?" Brissett said. "Hell yeah."
