Now that free agency has officially begun and players can directly go right to new teams as the new league year started Wednesday, the Cardinals have added a couple more to the roster.
(* - pending physicals, of course, before anything is official. If that wasn't apparent before, don't ever forget it now.)
The Cardinals are adding former Jaguars safety Andrew Wingard following the departure of Jalen Thompson. Wingard has only been a starter for two of his seven NFL seasons, but one of them was last season. He started all 16 games in which he appeared, with 84 tackles and a career-best nine pass breakups (including a deep pass to Xavier Weaver at State Farm Stadium to seal a Jacksonville win this past season, but we won't talk about that.)
He has 44 starts in 104 career games. He has been good at special teams, and figures to work with Budda Baker and Rabbit Taylor-Demerson at the position.
The Cardinals are also bringing in a new long snapper, after a decade of Aaron Brewer. (Brewer is a free agent; we will see if they might want to give him a chance to compete.) The new guy is 35-year-old Casey Kreiter, who has been with the Giants since 2020 and was playing for new Cardinals special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial.
Before Kreiter got to the Giants, he was the one who had replaced Brewer with the Broncos in 2016 after Brewer came to the Cardinals.
Both will be reportedly signing one-year deals.
