Every day, Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort finds his way to the practice field. It could be in Tempe when it's the regular season or OTAs, or at State Farm Stadium this time of year for training camp.
"There is nothing more important that we do than practice," Ossenfort said. "To be out there first-hand, and trying to understand and watching it live, I have a lot to learn. I learn every day from our coaches. I try to understand what we are asking players to do schematically, mentally, so that when I evaluate and when our staff evaluates, we are evaluating correctly."
If there is a position the Cardinals might want to upgrade, Ossenfort doesn't sound like it. For all the talk about maybe adding a wide receiver or an interior offensive linemen, that time -- for now -- has passed.
"Right now our roster is set where it is and we're going to let those guys go out and compete," Ossenfort said, and since the Cardinals haven't even put on pads, only so much can be gleaned at the moment anyway.
But that doesn't mean it can't change in a couple weeks, or by the end of the month.
"Roster construction never ends," Ossenfort said. "We're constantly looking at, this time of year, guys that are free agents, guys that may be let go by other teams.
"You're at the mercy at what's available. But that's a constant."
-- Linebacker J.J. Russell, who was taken to the hospital on Thursday for precautionary reasons after a hellacious collison, was able to return to the team later in the evening. He is in concussion protocol now, but Gannon said he's doing well.
-- Always interesting to see all the defenders race to any ball that ends up on the ground, including obvious incomplete passes. I know most teams teach their defenders to do as much, but defensive coordinator Nick Rallis has his guys making any ball on the ground look like a fumble in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl.
-- Kyler Murray hit Marvin Harrison Jr. on one particularly impressive play-action deep throw. There were a lot of deep throws -- Jacoby Brissett can launch a moon ball -- and we will see how much of that will make it into games.
-- Darius Robinson had an impressive sack during 11-on-11 at one point and the pass rush definitely was causing havoc, especially in the back end of the practice (which was low tempo). Xavier Thomas also looked like a bat out of hell screaming off the edge for another "sack." But it needs to be remembered that the offensive linemen can't really block right now. Pads go on Monday. "We're not really playing football," Ossenfort said.
-- DL Calais Campbell was absent. I am guessing it is one of those vet days he spoke about Thursday. "Honestly, I have to take veteran days off," Campbell said. "I don't know if I look forward to them. I like being out with the guys ... but I have to take those days off. In Year 18, it'd be impossible for me to be ready to go Week 1 if I don't take some time off."
-- Cornerback Starling Thomas V came down awkwardly after leaping for a way-high pass and was down for a moment late in practice, and for a second straight day the crowd went silent as a player was tended to. Unlike Russell, Thomas was able to get up under his own power after a minute or two and climb aboard a cart to be taken back to the locker room.
-- The Cardinals get an off day Saturday before returning to practice (open to the public) on Sunday. Monday will be their first padded practice of camp.
