On Tuesday, Jonathan Gannon said Jacoby Brissett was going to start at quarterback for the Cardinals on Sunday.

On Wednesday, he indirectly said Brissett would be starting for at least a month by announcing Kyler Murray will be going on Injured Reserve because of his lingering foot injury.

Murray has already missed three games. He will have to miss at least four more. The first game he would be eligible to return would be at home against the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 7.

"It's the best thing for him and for us," Gannon said. "He's fully committed. What he is going to concentrate on is getting healthy. He is not healthy enough to play, and he needs to get healthy so he can get back to playing football."

Gannon acknowledged that Murray as a scrambler and using his legs does impact what "fully healthy" means to Kyler specifically. Asked if Murray would be able to return this season, Gannon said "I hope so. We have a lot of ball left to play."

Gannon said the decision was reached Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, in talking with Murray and others. It is a turn from when Murray first got hurt Week 5 and was still questionable with a possibility of playing in each of the two games following. Gannon said for him, Murray was a gametime decision -- or at least seeing on Saturday if he'd be ready -- at that point, which is why he hadn't previously been put on IR.

"The reasons why we did what we did, there are a lot of scenarios out there that can happen as you get closer to a game," he said. "This pivot, I would say, is completely predicated on the information we have now."

Murray hasn't spoken to the media since after the Titans game on Oct. 5. Gannon said Murray took the news he'd go on IR "as good as you can take it."

"He wants to play football," Gannon added.

Kedon Slovis, who already has been Brissett's backup, now will have the role for at least a month. Gannon praised Slovis' "live arm." The Cardinals are expected to add another quarterback at some point, although it might be on the practice squad, which is where Slovis was before Murray's injury.

PRACTICE SQUAD MOVE

The Cardinals released offensive lineman Nick Leverett from the practice squad, opening a spot there in addition to the one on the 53-man roster with Murray's move to IR.
