Cardinals Reportedly Adding Veteran Tyler Allgeier As Free Agent

Running back would join Conner, Benson in backfield

The Cardinals are reportedly adding former Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier as a free agent, in a move not surprising since his name was linked to the team back during the week at the Scouting Combine.

The deal is only for two years and up to $12.25 million, so palatable.

But perhaps more importantly, it is a second move in two days that likely ends much of the speculation that the Cardinals could take running back Jeremiyah Love third in the NFL Draft.

The Cardinals revised veteran James Conner's contract on Sunday, so Conner will be back. Now they pick up Allgeier, and they also have Trey Benson. Benson, who will likely have to fight for playing time now, needs to show he can stay healthy. But in the end, the Cardinals proved you need a deep running back room to survive a 17-game season, and that's part of the Allgeier addition. It also fits what new coach Mike LaFleur has worked with offensively in his career, more of a running back by committee look (although Kyren Williams was a pretty good No. with the Rams.)

Allgeier was likely looking for more opportunity after playing behind Bijan Robinson in Atlanta. Last season the 5-foot-10, 225-pounder had 514 yards and eight touchdowns on 143 carries; he had a 1,035-yard rookie season with the Falcons in 2022. For his career he has averaged 4.3 yards a carry.
