As he spoke for the first time as the Cardinals head coach on Tuesday, Mike LaFleur said he was ready to quickly start assembling a coaching staff.
"We owe it to these players to build the best staff that we can," LaFleur said.
On Wednesday, he showed how quickly that was happening. First came the multiple reports that he was hiring former Broncos head coach Nathanial Hackett as the team's offensive coordinator. Hackett spent last season working for LaFleur's brother Matt in Green Bay as a defensive analyst, but he is best known for being the Packers offensive coordinator from 2019-2021 during some of Aaron Rodgers' best seasons. He was Rodgers' offensive coordinator with the Jets in 2023-24 as well.
LaFleur already said he will be the one calling the offensive plays.
A handful of defensive coordinator possibilities also surfaced on Wednesday. One was coaching with LaFleur last season with the Rams -- assistant head coach and defensive pass coordinator Aubrey Pleasant. Also reported were Texans defensive backs coach Dino Vasso, and Giants outside linebackers Charlie Bullen. Bullen was already in Arizona once before, serving as a linebackers coach under Kliff Kingsbury.
All three have interviewed for other defensive coordinator openings.
