Josh Sweat, in real time, didn't know the ball was there in his arm. But when it came up on video during a team meeting, he definitely did, especially when safety Budda Baker barked at him while they watched the play, 'Bro, get the ball!"
"I was like, 'Oh man, ain't no way I didn't get it," Sweat said. "The O-lineman, he was still on me and he knocked it away. I'm like, (expletive), I didn't even know. I'm thinking, 'You're looking dumb as hell.'"
The outside linebacker laughs as he recounts the story. "The film was in slow motion," he added. "Of course you're going to see that."
Defensive coordinator Nick Rallis has stressed the need for more takeaways all offseason, and he did again this week, noting takeaways and limiting explosive plays are at the top of his unit's to-do list. The Cardinals have four takeaways in four games, tied for 14th in the league (Jacksonville already has 13 to lead the NFL), although their plus-1 turnover ratio is tied for 10th.
Three of the turnovers are interceptions, which are the more "controllable" of the turnovers. Picks can be created with a heavy pass rush, tight coverage and instinctive defensive backs. Fumbles tend to be more random, like Sweat's strip of Sam Darnold.
"That's how the game goes," Baker said. "He had a great strip-sack. The ball was in his arm, but how fast the game is going, he was just trying to get the sack and get the ball out. It's a millisecond. ... It didn't bounce the right way."
There are times to be smart about going for turnovers, and times to be aggressive, Baker said. If he's in space one-on-one with a ballcarrier, he needs to make a sure tackle. But if there is a pile up, guys should look for a strip.
"We preach that every day," Baker said.
Sweat, tied with Calais Campbell for the team lead with three sacks, still can't believe what happened. Thinking back, it actually ended up worse, he said, because had Darnold gone down with the ball it would've been a loss of six yards, but the ball fumbling forward made it only a loss of one.
"You still gotta recover it," Sweat said.
