Brentson Buckner has been selected as a head coach for the 92nd East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 21 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Buckner, who has been the Cardinals' defensive line coach since 2013, will lead the East squad in an All-Star game designed to raise the profile of college players aiming to get drafted.

NFL teams that missed the playoffs nominated deserving assistant coaches for consideration to lead the teams, and Buckner was chosen along with Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards. Both coaches will need to fill out a 12-person staff for the game.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians has made it a goal to create a coaching tree with his assistants. Former defensive coordinator Todd Bowles was the first one to get a head job, joining the Jets in 2015, while offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin has interviewed with three teams this offseason.

Buckner, 45, is one of the younger coaches on staff and is seen as an up-and-comer in the coaching world. He played for the Steelers, Bengals, 49ers and Panthers during a 12-year career as a defensive lineman.

He coached high school football after retirement and interned with the Steelers before joining the Cardinals.
