Cardinals Load Up On Depth With Jack Gibbens, Andrew Billings

Wingard also signs contract as expected

The Cardinals missed Mack Wilson Sr. in the middle of their defense in the second half of the season, and will welcome him back now that he is healed.

But finding more depth at inside linebacker is important, and why they signed Jack Gibbens on Monday to a two-year contract.

Gibbens was among a handful of depth free-agent additions. Also signing one-year contracts were safety Andrew Wingard and defensive lineman Andrew Billings.

Gibbens, going into his fifth season, had his best year for New England after playing for Tennessee for three seasons (Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort was in the Titans front office when he arrived as an undrafted free agent.) Gibbens started eight games and played all 17, with 81 tackles, eight tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and four pass breakups.

The Cardinals have Cody Simon going into his second season at inside linebacker, but after releasing Akeem Davis-Gaither, there was a need.

Wingard's arrival came up last week, and after starting 16 games for Jacksonville last season, he gets into the mix with Rabbit Taylor-Demerson to start following the free-agent departure of Jalen Thompson. Wingard said he heard from Taylor-Demerson welcoming him as soon as the news came out that Wingard would be coming to the Cardinals.

"I had a lot more interest this time around," Wingard said of his second free-agent attempt. "Arizona was the first one, right when it opened, they called. It's nice to be wanted."

Wingard said playing defense full time last season boosted his stock. Wingard had 84 tackles, a interception and nine passes defensed in 16 starts for the Jaguars.

Billings, going into his ninth season, is a 6-foot-1, 340-pound nose tackle who started 14 of his 17 games for a stout Bears defense last season. He figures to slide into the role vacated when Dalvin Tomlinson was released.
