Devin Fitzgerald, Son Of Larry, Will Play Wide Receiver At Notre Dame

Freshman college season could be same year as father going into Canton

Under the category of "Dang, time is going by way too fast," Devin Fitzgerald -- the oldest son of Larry Fitzgerald -- announced on Saturday he was committing to Notre Dame to play college football.

Devin, a three-star wide receiver who is heading into his senior season at Phoenix Brophy Prep, had narrowed his choices to Notre Dame, Clemson, UCLA and Stanford. (The latter of which reminded me of something Larry told me many years ago, that he could see Devin playing lacrosse at Stanford one day. A Notre Dame education isn't too bad either.)

Assuming things go as expected, Devin will play his freshman season with the Irish the same year that his father enters the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Hopefully Irish coach Marcus Freeman would be willing to let Devin leave preseason camp to attend the ceremony in Canton.

Having covered Dad's entire Cardinals career, I've seen Devin grow up from a distance. We had the pleasure of working with him recently when he was willing to play a role in our Cardinals Overtime episode about Larry's incredible 2008 playoff performance.

Now Devin will be trying to make his own mark as a wide receiver, first with one more season at Brophy (including new Brophy strength coach Kyle Vanden Bosch) and then in college at Notre Dame.

You know Larry is excited to see how that turns out.
