Much To Sort Along The Offensive Line

The draft is over and again, one of the areas that will bear the spotlight -- even though it'll really be hard to know much about it until into the preseason -- is the offensive line.

The Cardinals have numbers to throw at the unit. The left tackle will be D.J. Humphries. The right tackle will be Marcus Gilbert. The guards - - who plays what side is TBD -- will be Justin Pugh and J.R. Sweezy. At center, Mason Cole and A.Q. Shipley will fight it out. As reserves, the battle most likely will be between Korey Cunningham, Will Holden and some of these rookies -- whether it be Josh Miles or William Sweet or Tariq Cole. On the interior, Max Garcia, Colby Gossett, Jeremy Vujnovich will fight with draft pick Lamont Gaillard (and if Shipley wins the center job, Cole is a prime candidate to play both center and guard for depth.)

There are other options on the roster too. That's what the offseason and camp are for. Front-office man Adrian Wilson on the recent Big Red Rage talked about the competition, and while it'll be there for backup jobs, it's going to be difficult to dislodge the presumed starters. But the line may be about less on who is there Sept. 8 when the Cards kick off against the Lions but perhaps what it looks like in Week 4, or Week 8, or beyond. The line, the last couple of years, has been about the injuries. In this case, availability may be as crucial as ability.
