QB Discussions Yet To Be Had For New Coach Mike LaFleur

Position will be hashed out with GM Monti Ossenfort just like rest of roster

Mike LaFleur had just arrived in Tempe, his office still barren prior to a full move-in. He joked during his Tuesday press conference introducing him as the Cardinals' new head coach that conversations about building the team were going to start soon after all his meet-and-greet obligations were over.

So no, he wasn't going to have any answers about the Cardinals' quarterback situation. Not yet.

"We've got to go back and talk about all these decisions – quarterback, O-line, specialists," LaFleur said. "Everything. It's our job and for these players to build the best roster at each position. Those are conversations we will have, and I am looking forward in about 45 minutes getting after it."

In an interview with Arizona Sports, LaFleur declined to get into Murray's future, again noting those discussions have yet to take place.

GM Monti Ossenfort said in the press conference announcing Jonathan Gannon's dismissal that "all options are on the table" at quarterback.

Starting quarterback Kyler Murray missed the final 12 games of the season, spending much of the time on Injured Reserve with a foot injury. Veteran Jacoby Brissett and Kedon Slovis are also on the roster, and all three are under contract for 2026.

LaFleur has spent the last three seasons with likely MVP Matthew Stafford at QB. He has also worked with Falcons QB Matt Ryan.

Asked about Murray, LaFleur said he "touched base" with Murray after getting the job.

"I'll say this, being in this division for seven years, it was never fun (to play him.) I have a lot of respect for him as a player," LaFleur said. "He was never a fun challenge to go against."

Whoever is playing quarterback, LaFleur will be the one calling plays for him. LaFleur didn't call plays in Los Angeles the past three seasons as offensive coordinator because head coach Sean McVay was doing it. LaFleur did call plays the two seasons before that in New York as OC of the Jets.

"I missed it," he said.
