When James Conner was lost for the season with a foot injury, it was supposed to be Trey Benson's opportunity to prove himself a starting running back.
Now, Benson is headed to Injured Reserve himself.
Coach Jonathan Gannon said Wednesday the second-year back was going on IR on Wednesday with a knee injury suffered against the Seahawks, keeping him out at least four games and dealing another blow to an offense that is trying to get on track and a running game that has struggled all season.
Gannon said Benson should return this season. Gannon said he believes Benson played through the injury on Thursday after it happened. He didn't bring up any issues until Friday morning. ESPN reported Benson had arthroscopic surgery.
Michael Carter was signed to the active roster earlier this week from the practice squad, joining Emari Demercado and Bam Knight in the running back room. Asked if Demercado would take over as starter or Carter, Gannon said "we'll see how the week goes."
"Everyone has to do their job," Gannon said. "I'm real comfortable with the guys who are assuming the role."
The team also signed veteran D'Ernest Johnson to the practice squad on Monday, and added running back Jermar Jefferson to the practice squad on Wednesday.
Defensive lineman Darius Robinson (chest) won't practice and the Cardinals will see how he progresses.
The Cardinals also re-signed 2024 seventh-round pick cornerback Jaden Davis to the practice squad on Wednesday, and released cornerback Ekow Boye-Doe from the practice squad. The Carolina Panthers signed away offensive lineman Jake Curhan from the Cards' practice squad on Wednesday as well.
