The question mark surrounding the quarterback position remained as the Cardinals traveled to Indianapolis.
But the Cardinals made sure to cover themselves on Saturday.
The team signed quarterback Kedon Slovis from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. To make room, the Cardinals placed punter Blake Gillikin -- who appeared on the injury report with a back injury on Thursday -- on Injured Reserve. Gillikin must miss at least four games.
Now that the Cardinals have three quarterbacks on the active roster, all three quarterbacks can dress on game day with one serving as the emergency QB. The decision to bring Slovis up comes as starting quarterback Kyler Murray is listed as questionable with a foot injury. Murray is expected to be a game-day decision.
The Cardinals had already accounted for Gillikin's status by signing veteran Pat O'Donnell on Friday. Gillikin has punted the ball well this season. He booted three of his punts at least 60 yards last weekend and is top five in gross punting at 51.7 yards. Gillikin also finished last season on IR with an ankle injury. He missed the entire 2020 season with a back injury.
Heading into this game against the Colts, the Cardinals also elevated defensive linemen Zach Carter and Anthony Goodlow from the practice squad for a second straight week. Defensive lineman Bilal Nichols was ruled out on Saturday for personal reasons.
The uncertainty regarding Murray's health puts a spotlight on backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett. If Brissett gets the nod as the starter, Slovis finds himself one snap away from taking part in his first regular-season action.
Slovis, a Scottsdale native, signed to the practice squad as the Cardinals prior to the season opener. He had spent all of 2024 on the Texans practice squad. In his five year college career, Slovis passed for 11,689 yards and 80 touchdowns.
