The Cardinals could soon have Trey Benson back for a game.

Coach Jonathan Gannon said Wednesday the team was opening the 21-day practice window for the running back, who has been on Injured Reserve after a Week 4 knee injury that reportedly required an arthroscopic surgical procedure.

Benson's return would be a boon to a team that will be without running back Emari Demercado, after Demercado hurt his ankle against the 49ers last weekend. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. will miss a second straight game after his appendix surgery.

Now that his window is opened, Benson can be activated at any time to the roster. Gannon said Benson would be evaluated "day by day."

On the season, Benson has 29 carries for 160 yards, a 5.5-yard average.

The Cardinals also signed punter Matt Haack to replace the released Pat O'Donnell. Haack was with the Cardinals in training camp during Gannon's first season in 2023 before losing the job to Nolan Cooney. Cooney had the job for a month that season before the Cardinals signed current punter Blake Gillikin. Gillkin is on IR with a back injury.

The team brought back a familiar name to the practice squad as well: wide receiver Trent Sherfield. Sherfield caught 28 passes over 44 games with the Cardinals from 2018-2020, before stints with the 49ers, Dolphins, Bills, Vikings and Broncos. He was recently released by Denver.

The Cards brought back linebacker Jared Bartlett and added offensive lineman Trey Wedig to the practice squad, releasing wide receiver Jalen Virgil to make room.
