Before the Cardinals go to Denver for joint practice with the Broncos, a new face will join them on the flight.
The team signed wide receiver Kelly Akharaiyi on Tuesday and placed wide receiver Trishton Jackson on Injured Reserve. Jackson left Saturday's preseason opener with a thumb injury.
Akharaiyi, an undrafted free agent from Mississippi State, visited and had a tryout with the Cardinals on Monday. The wide receiver had spent time with the Bills during the early portion of training camp. Buffalo released Akharaiyi on July 22, before bringing him back less than a week later. He had been cut for a second time on Friday.
Akharaiyi spent one season in the SEC with Mississippi State where he had 25 receptions for 391 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Prior to Starkville, he played at UTEP and put up solid numbers in the 24 games he played. He finished with 69 receptions, 1,308 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns.
Jackson earned some second team reps during training camp but mostly found himself in the mix with the third unit. The Cardinals signed Jackson to a futures deal back in January.
The addition of Akharaiyi serves as a depth piece ahead of what's expected to be a physical joint practice against the Broncos. The two teams will work together on Thursday, followed by the second week of preseason action on Saturday.
